What is shown here is only a fraction of the thousands of titles available at Red Lodge
Books. We are a general bookstore, carrying the IndieNext bestsellers, a full line of
fiction, and a wonderful children's section, but our focus is books that are set in this
area and books written by local authors, with a strong slant toward nature, science, and
the outdoors. Please feel free to call or email us concerning availability of specific
titles, or just stop in and browse.
- American Indian
Carbon County, which Red Lodge Books calls home, is rich with Native history, and we're proud to carry a selection of books that reflects that history.
- Beartooth Mountains
The Absaroka-Beartooth Wilderness comprises 944,000 acres, containing two distinct mountain ranges--namely the Beartooths and Absarokas--with 30 peaks over 12,000 feet. It is an integral part of the 20 million acre (81,000 kmē) Greater Yellowstone Ecosystem. The wilderness includes 700 miles of trails, hundreds of lakes, dozens of streams and small glaciers, and we consider it the greatest backyard we could ever have!
- Biographies and Memoirs
Our biography and memoir section, as you might suspect, focuses on the people of the West, both historic (e.g., Crazy Horse, Liver Eatin' Johnston) and modern (e.g., Laura Bell, Mark Spragg).
- Children's Nature and Science
Children's books are one of our specialties at Red Lodge Books, and there's nothing we love more than nature and science books for kids.
- Children's Picture Books
Our selection of children's books leans toward local-themed and educational books, with some fun stuff and classics mixed in. We have a separate category for children's nature and science.
- Cooking, Diet, and Drinks
We specialize in local cookbooks and books about tea, chocolate, and other food and drink products we carry in our store.
- General & Literary Fiction
Some of our literary fiction was written by local (Montana/Wyoming) authors, and some was written about our home here in the West. Either way, what you see on this website is only a small sampling of what's in the store.
- Hiking/Outdoor Guidebooks
The areas surrounding Red Lodge, including the Absaroka-Beartooth Wilderness, are some of the most beautiful outdoor playgrounds in the world. These hiking guides help you to find your way off the roads and onto the trails.
- Hunting & Fishing
Our area is a paradise for people who love hunting and fishing. We stock books and maps that can help you to maximize the experience while you're here.
- Local Authors
There are some incredibly talented writers around here! We consider "local" to be anywhere within about an hour's drive of Red Lodge, so it includes Billings, Cody, Absarokee, and others.
- Mystery/Thriller
There are a lot of great Montana/Wyoming mystery writers. The ones we like to carry give a feeling for life in the West and our connection to nature and the outdoors.
- Nature & Science
Since Red Lodge is located in such a beautiful wilderness area, we attract a lot of outdoor-oriented people and we stock the bookstore accordingly.
- Ranching, Farming, and Cowboys
Our area is surrounded by working farms and ranches, and one of the biggest events of the year is Red Lodge's Home of Champions Rodeo. Our books in this category tend toward real and practical, as opposed to the Hollywood cowboy.
- Red Lodge Area
Red Lodge is a small town with a rich history, and much of that history--and the history of the surrounding area--has been written down in this collection of local books.
- Tea Books
One of the primary functions of our tea bar is education. To help meet this goal, we present a selection of books about tea. Pick one out, brew up cup of your favorite tea, and enjoy!
- Western History
The history of the American West is deep and fascinating. This is one of the strongest sections in our store (with a focus, of course, on Montana and Wyoming), and this website provides a representative sampling of a few of the books we carry.
- Yellowstone National Park
Red Lodge is a gateway community to Yellowstone National Park, our nation's first national park.
