Local (Absarokee) author Dan Aadland is a student of American history, as a hunter, horseman, and former
Marine. As someone passionate about the West, Dan had long
felt a kinship with Theodore Roosevelt. One day, on a single-footing
horse, lever-action rifle under his knee, Aadland set out to become
acquainted with TR as only those who shared his experiences could. In Trace of TR: A Montana Hunter's Journey

documents that quest, inviting readers to ride along and
get to know Theodore Roosevelt through the western environment that so
profoundly influenced him.

Accompany Aadland as he rides the broad
prairies in search of TR's "prongbuck," tracks elk through the rugged
Big Horn Mountains, and pursues a glimpse of the grizzly in the
Absaroka Wilderness. Along the way the author's campfire musings and
reflections on Roosevelt's writings further deepen and enrich this
unique examination of our twenty-sixth president. With the trill of the
western meadowlark and the bugle of the elk, the creak of saddle
leather and the scent of sage, Aadland's journey takes readers into
TR's beloved Dakota Territory then and now, offering a kindred spirit's
moving, deftly drawn portrait of both the land and the man across the
space of a century.

Dan will be doing a book signing from 3:00 to 5:00, and then a talk about his adventures and Roosevelt at 5:00.

Local author J. D. Oliver has a new book out, called As the Eagle Flies. J. D. highlights the struggle between good and evil in all his work, whether it is novels, or the cowboy poetry he writes and performs. He was born in Montana, where his roots go back to the early 1800s.

In As the Eagle Flies, Clay Bronson is a product of the nineteenth century, half
white, half Cheyenne, neither fitting into the fast pace of the twenty first
century. As an ex-Navy fighter pilot, he returns to his roots in the Big Horns
of Wyoming where he joins his Father and Brother on the rodeo circuit. Then one
day their plane develops engine trouble and they make a forced landing in New
Mexico where they find their counter parts on a Spanish Land Grant. This is
where the story begins, as they follow the path of the Eagle, as they fly
toward their destiny.

J. D. will be signing books starting at 3:00, and giving a reading/talk at 5:00. We look forward to seeing you there!

Montana author/radio personality Chrysti Smith is coming back to Red Lodge Books to talk about (what else?) words. Her "Chrysti the Wordsmith" radio broadcast is a daily, two-minute audio interlude produced in the studios of KGLT-FM at Montana State University, Bozeman.

Since 1990, Chrysti has been plumbing the depths of dictionaries obscure,
arcane and pedestrian to craft word and phrase histories for her radio
audience, and for her two books, Verbivore's Feast: A Banquet of Word and Phrase Origins, and Verbivore's Feast Second Course: More Word & Phrase Origins.

Chrysti's books are fascinating and entertaining, and her talks are even more so. Come by and meet her between 3:00 and 5:00, and she'll give a talk about words and word origins at 5:00.
