Upon hearing that land was still available for homesteading in Alaska, Keith, Shirley, and Keith's younger brother left Billings, Montana, March 1, 1959, and drove over the Alcan Highway to arrive in Homer, March 18th. Preceded by heavy snowstorms, they spent two months waiting for the snow to melt. An original "Alaskan Sourdough" invited them to live with him and take care of his place while he visited the "outside."
While there, Shirley mastered a coal range and made sourdough pancakes. Speedy, the fisherman, tried to introduce hem to delicious Alaskan seafood. They met many of the friendly homesteaders and learn about a religious cult that was also there to homestead.
When Shirley suspected she was pregnant, she visited the local doctor, was shocked to find medical practice was about fifty years back in time. On May 21st they moved to the homestead, on the bench above Homer and started to prove up their claim.
In the wildly beautiful countryside, they survived fire, killing frost, abandoned wild dogs, and were terrorized by a grizzly with cubs. Before they left, they salmon fished on the Anchor river and partied in town with Air Force soldiers stationed at Mt. Ohlson.
