Cowboy poetry is usually rhyming, usually metered, usually upbeat, often tells a story or has a surprise ending. Why?
I have noticed that much non-rhyming poetry is venting anger or despair. The cowboy is the way he is by choice. If he didn't prefer being alone, he would get a higher-paying job in town. He has much time to think. Even if he's with a crew or riding pens in a feedlot, his mind is on two channels. His subconscious mind tells him if an animal is sick. His conscious is thinking in words, playing with vocabulary. He instinctively wants to be happy. Rhyming, metered thoughts are more like a song in his heart and are easier to remember. The Native Americans passed their oral history from generation to generation in a chant. So the cowboy communicates with himself and others by poetry. The more alone he is, the more likely he is to record his thoughts in metered rhyme.
